The Importance of Good Ski Equipment and Snowboard Equipment   by Margaret Winfrey

The importance of good ski equipment cannot be overemphasized, and the same is also true of snowboard equipment. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced skier or snowboarder, you should use the best equipment you can afford unless you only get onto the slopes once a year on vacation.

If you ski or snowboard seriously or live in an area when you get out onto the slopes fairly often, then the better the ski equipment the better. The same applies to snowboard equipment, when it is also very important to understand exactly the type and design of snowboard you want and what you want to use it for – freeride, freestyle or Alpine. Each of these requires a different type of board.

Freeride is what most snowboarders do on the mountains, and freeride boards are fairly versatile with both ends curled up and the board fairly soft and flexible but able to hold a fast turn. This snowboard equipment is recommended for anybody learning the sport or who has no wish to specialize.

In freestyle, on the other hand, a great deal of agility is needed in the board, and these boards are normally seen around the parks and halfpipes, but can also be used on most parts of the mountain. If you are a good skateboarder, then get a freestyle board. For fast downhill rides the Alpine or carving board is great for carving tight turns as you slalom down the slopes, generally longer and narrower than the other boards. Downhill skiers often switch to a carving snowboard as they cross over between skiing and snowboarding.

If you are not sure what type of snowboard equipment you need, then you should seek out a snowboard and ski shop that is run by people know their snowboarding. Ask for advice, since some stores will try to sell you an Alpine board because they tend to be more expensive. The snowboard shops run by real snowboarders will keep you right, so whether it’s an offline or online store, check where it’s situated. If it’s in a snow or mountain area, then the owners likely know the sport and can keep you right on equipment.

Much the same applies with skiing and ski equipment. Whether it is the type of ski or the binding you need some advice on, a general sports store selling Skis is unlikely to be able to give you any advice other than what’s on the sales brochure. In fact, many people are tending to leave the slopes nowadays and head off cross country with their skis, and if that is your main type of skiing, then you will be best with skis made for that type of skiing, and fitted with telemark bindings.

However, ask the store selling you the ski equipment, and you can often tell by the way the question is answered whether or not they know what they are talking about or simply regurgitating something they have learned. It is very important with any sport or pastime that you get the correct information when buying the gear – it can be fairly expensive, so you want to make sure you are buying the right stuff.

This is particularly so with skiing and snowboard equipment, because get it wrong and you will soon notice. You don’t want to be going down an artificial slope in a set of cross-country skis, or loose boots than can break your ankle. Maybe you want step-in bindings for your skis or snowboard, so you can avoiding sitting in the snow to put them back on if they come loose. You really need to take advice on that because some bindings are suitable for experienced snowboarders or skiers, but not for beginners.

Ask about the flex point, camber and waist width of a particular snowboard, and if you get a sensible answer without you having to explain what you mean, then the sales staff can likely be trusted to help you. If not, then find somewhere else where the staff is more knowledgeable. Not all skiers know about snowboards of course, but if you find a good offline shop or a website that can answer your questions intelligently then that’s where to buy your ski or snowboard equipment, whichever you are after.

It’s not always the prettiest website or best stocked sports shop that can offer you good advice – it’s the knowledge and the experience of the people running it that’s much more important and you can find that out using a few simple questions. Whether it’s ski equipment you are looking for or snowboard equipment and accessories, the people that can help you most are those that do the sport themselves.

About the Author

It is important to find out the details of any sports equipment you buy, and the important details that a ski and Snowboard Shop should offer you are available from Aspen Ski & Board where you will also find advice on how to get the best from your ski equipment and snowboard equipment.

R.P.M. (1970)

R.P.M. (1970)

$19.95

Stanley Kramer had a knack for tackling stories where social change is the background for compelling drama on a personal level, as in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and The Defiant Ones. In R.P.M. the politics are more overt, and Kramer deftly takes on the counter-culture of the late ‘60s to explore how change impacts the individual. Anthony Quinn is the liberal and well-regarded college professor in a period of increasing radicalism. His students demand change, and he supports their desires, but when his role of professor-advisor changes to college administrator, he must decide where to draw the line. Ann-Margret (Viva Las Vegas, Tommy), Gary Lockwood (Model Shop), and Paul Winfield (Sounder) also star in this powerful examination of campus life in its most dynamic stage in history. Newly remastered.

After fleeting marriages to Henry Fonda and William Wyler, Margaret Sullavan found contentment as the wife of producer Leland Hayward (Jason Robards) and as the mother of three. Or so it seemed, until the marriage crumbled, the children rebelled and she was found dead of an overdose at the age of 50. Best Actress Emmy® nominee Lee Remick portrays Sullavan, the luminous beauty who turned her talent and intelligence into stardom on stage and screen (including the beloved Three Comrades and The Shop Around the Corner). Based on the bestseller by Sullavan’s daughter Brooke and produced by her son Bill, Haywire powerfully shows how a burnished image of privilege and fame can hide – at least for a time – the reality of heartbreak and self-destruction.

Black Books is a second-hand bookshop in London run by an Irishman named Bernard Black. He is probably the planet’s worst-suited person to run such an establishment: he makes no effort to sell, closes at strange hours on a whim, is in a perpetual alcoholic stupor, abhors his customers (sometimes physically abusing them) and is often comatose at his desk. Help comes in the lumpy shape of Manny Bianco, a hairy, bumbling individual who (almost by osmosis) becomes Bernard’s assistant. Manny is not exactly great at the job either but he is a million times better than Bernard. Next door is Fran, an anxious, frustrated woman who runs a sort of new-age shop selling the most unlikely bits of arty junk. Fran is friends with Bernard and, through him, with Manny; together the trio become embroiled in escapades that are sometimes extreme or violent or fantastically ludicrous, and always bizarre.

The pre-code tale of adultery that squeaked past the censors! Coming at the tail end of 1934, Housewife was released shortly before the imposition of the “Hays Code would render its subject matter ‘verboten!’ This turgid melodrama finds modern bachelor girl Patricia Berkeley (Bette Davis) dueling it out with modern housewife Nan Reynolds (Ann Dvorak) for the affections and ministrations of Nan’s husband, William (George Brent). Ambitious office manager William finally succeeds in setting up shop for himself in the advertising biz thanks to help from copywriter Pat and ideas from housewife Nan. When his late nights working at the office with Pat turn into something else, Nan must decide if William is worth fighting for. That is, if Pat will let her. Davis is at her vamping, doe-eyed best as the jaded sophisticated Pat, a copywriter who knows how to spin the right line to lure a guy.

Playmate of the Month, movie deals, a luxurious life in L.A.’s ritziest enclaves: That’s a lot to handle for Dorothy Stratten, who little more than a year before was a 17-year-old working in an ice cream shop. It’s even more to handle for Paul Snider, the ambitious wheeler-dealer who discovers her, puts her on a path of fame and fortune…and takes it all away from her in a brutal moment of jealousy and rage. Jamie Lee Curtis portrays the centerfold sensation, torn by her sense of obligation to Snider (whom Stratten married) yet growing up fast in the whirl of success and opportunity surrounding her. And future Hill Street Blues Emmy winner Bruce Weitz plays the dangerous man who ultimately couldn’t have Stratten. So neither would anyone else.

They’re Grumpy Old Men [Side A]. And since they’re played by famed screen odd couple Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, they’re also Funny Old Men. The wit hits the fan as the two play Minnesota ice-fishing pals whose crusty friendship grows hilariously icier as they vie for an attractive widow (Ann-Margret). Also in the cast are Daryl Hannah, Kevin Pollak, Ossie Davis and an outrageously randy Burgess Meredith. The two leads grab their fishing rods to reel in another comic whopper in the sequel Grumpier Old Men [Side B]. Most of the original cast returns, and Sophia Loren plays the vivacious newcomer who wants to turn the beloved bait shop into a chichi ristorante. Of course, in this part of the Land of 1000 Lakes, that means war! Enjoy. And, yes, this is the movie with the “man-sized manicotti” outtakes!

Among the harridans and hard-timers in a women’s prison, one inmate stands out like a diamond in a box of tarnished costume jewelry. She’s Mary Turner, convicted of a crime she didn’t commit. Once an innocent shop girl, now embittered by three years in the pen, Mary has big plans after her release. First she’ll make a fortune running scams that stay just within the law. Then she’ll seek revenge on the man who put her behind bars by marrying his guileless son. Joan Crawford got one of her earliest solid dramatic roles in Paid (Grand Hotel was one year in the future), and she made the most of it. Her trenchant portrayal of Mary – tough and tender, smart and vulnerable – makes this version of the often-filmed story a standout.

Labor and management at the Sleeptite Pajama Factory aren’t getting much sleep lately: a proposed 7-1/2-cent hourly wage increase is the reason and a job action just may be the result. But not to worry: negotiating strategies here involve snappy stars, terrific tunes and dynamic dances, all part of one of the most infectiously joyful stage/screen musicals ever. Doris Day and a Broadway-seasoned supporting cast play The Pajama Game, the lighthearted, nimble-footed movie that whips the unlikely musical-comedy subject of a labor/management dispute into a buoyant, romantic delight. Day is Babe Williams, head of the employees’ grievance committee, who strikes sparks with shop superintendent Sid Sorokin (John Raitt in his only opportunity to play on of his stage triumph on film). And where there are spark, “Steam Heat” results. For the songs by Damn Yankees duo Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and the choreography by Bob Fosse (Cabaret, Sweet Charity) are too combustible to pass up, all under the direction of two musical masters of stage and screen, George Abbott and Stanley Donen. Besides “Steam Heat” (showcasing the quirky brilliance of dancer Carol Haney), catch “Hey There,” “I’m Not at All in Love,” “Hernando’s Hideaway,” “Small Talk,” “Once-a-Year Day,” “There Once Was a Man” and other all-time greats.

Following Tommy’s hostile divorce, he met his soulmate in Magz (Ruth Jones), who runs “Samsh the System.” That’s her T-shirt shop that keeps the authority figures running scared, usually by selling images of them smoking a joint. Completing Tommy’s surrogate family is his young lodger Raymond (Rasmus Hardiker), pest control trainee and uncomprehending disciple of Tommy’s worldly wisdom. Being self educated, Tommy often feels that he’s surrounded by idiots. Like when he has to visit Vicky (Morwenna Banks) who dispense work contracts and gross insult. Vicky is just one of the many reasons why Tommy’s anger management therapy sessions won’t be ending any time soon. Through it all, Tommy Saxondale is still the smartest and dumbest guy in the room.

GI families hit by the post-World War II housing crunch take over an abandoned New York City mansion. THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER In the third of their four screen pairings, Margaret Sullavan and James Stewart engage in retail romance wrapped in the ribbon of director Ernst Lubitsch’s trademark touch of wit and charm. Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle/Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (DBFE) (DVD)

$9.95

First off, let’s get this straight: Harold & Kumar are not your typical road-trip heroes. They’re way funnier. John Cho and Kal Penn play accomplished underachievers whose late-night quest for sliders and fries at White Castle [Side A] careens them onto a meandering road involving Princeton, pit stops, babes, a malevolent raccoon and a nonstop string of totally whack/raunchy situations. It’s not comedy for everyone. And exactly what you’re looking for. The delirious sequel [Side B] has H&K hauled off an airline, labeled as terrorists, tossed into you-know-where and escaping onto an even more twisted road filled with life’s potholes (with emphasis on one of those syllables). Here’s a shout out to the great supporting casts, especially a crude-’n’-’tude Neil Patrick Harris! HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE (UNRATED) INCLUDES: • Widescreen [16x9 1.85:1] Version • Deleted/Alternate Scenes • 3 Commentaries Including the 2 Stars and the Director, the Writers and “Extreme Sports Punk #1 • Interview with the 2 Stars • The Art of the Fart • Cast and Crew: Drive-Thru Blues • White Castle Cravers Hall of Fame Induction • Yeah All Too Much Music Video • A Trip to the Land of Burgers • Theatrical Trailers and More • Subtitles: English & Español (Main Feature. So they try to bridge the gap by competing together in the Hell of the West, a grueling race through the Rocky Mountains. For the first time ever, the brothers train and race side-by-side…while each privately confronts a nagging fear: the congenital ailment that struck down their father could just suddenly strike one of them. Writer Steve Tesich, and Academy Award winner for his bike-racing opus Breaking Away, now captures the sport’s excitement on an even larger scale. Against the backdrop of the Coors International Classic, the U.S.’s largest, most prestigious race, Tesich and director John Badham craft a dazzling, spirit-soaring spectacle. Says Rex Reed: “You’ll go away feeling good! American Flyers is a fine mixture of romance, humor and tears with action sequences among the most exciting ever captured on film.”

The Life of Mammals is the story of 4,000 species that have outlived the dinosaurs and conquered the farthest places on earth. With bodies kept warm by thick coats of fur and their developing young protected and nourished within their bodies, they have managed to colonize every part of the globe, dry or wet, hot or cold. Their adaptations for finding food have also had a profound effect on the way they move, socialize, mate and breed.

Take elite commandos, send them on a do-or-die assignment – and sit back and watch the action explode. The men-on-a-mission formula that worked in 1967’s The Dirty Dozen and in Where Eagles Dare (released in the U.S. in 1969) provides another salvo of volatile screen adventure with this strike-force saga released in 1968. Rod Taylor and Jim Brown are among a mercenary unit rolling on a steam train across the Congo, headed for the dual tasks of rescuing civilians imperiled by rebels and recovering a cache of diamonds. The film’s violence is fierce, unforgiving, ahead of its time. Quentin Tarantino would offer a tribute of sorts to this red-blooded wallop of a cult fave by using part of its compelling score in Inglourious Basterds.

Blue Planet Seas of Life: Ocean World / Frozen Seas (DVD)

$9.95

The Blue Planet, the definitive exploration of the Earth’s final frontier is now over. From the deep to the shore, from pole to pole it revealed extraordinary life and behaviour that had never before been filmed. In some cases the species were only recently known to scientists. Programme 1 – Introduction “Our planet is a blue planet,” says David Attenborough. “Over 70 per cent of it is covered by the sea and the Pacific Ocean alone covers half the globe.” The oceans dominate the world’s weather systems, and support an enormous variety of life, from the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth, the blue whale, to the tiniest plankton. Programme 2 – Frozen Seas For most of the year, both poles are dark and bitterly cold. But there is still life at both ends of the Earth. Antarctica is a continent, a land mass in its own right surrounded by ice, where stubborn emperor penguins winter in temperatures below -50 degrees Celsius. The Arctic is a frozen sea surrounded by land, and here the polar bear rules – no seal, whale or bird is safe.

Hard Times at Douglass High: A No Child Left Behind Report Card (MOD)

Hard Times at Douglass High: A No Child Left Behind Report Card (MOD)

$19.95

“The No Child Left Behind Act was created to boost academic levels of American students by setting standardized goals across the nation – and holding states, districts and schools accountable for performance. For urban schools in high-poverty areas, reaching these goals is a daunting task, and many now face the possibility of being taken over by the state – even being shut down. At Frederick Douglass High School in Baltimore, MD, the expectations raised by NCLB have reached a critical point. Academy Award® winning filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond (I Am a Promise: The Children of Stanton Elementary School) offer a yearlong look inside a storied institution at a time when its very existence is in doubt. From cautionary profiles to triumphant tales, Hard Times at Douglass High serves as a reminder that education is inevitably an achievement of people, not policy.”
